Golapganj Festival

Mr Abu Taher is the convenor of the Golapganj festival

Mr Taher managed to hold such a festival twice in the United Kingdom. Over 50 different organisations from within the UK and from Bangladesh took part in the festival. The aim of the festival was to praise the older generation of Bangladeshis who first moved to the UK, most of them being from within the Golapganj area. They were all awarded for their contributions to the community and society as a whole. Mr. Taher wanted to celebrate our ancestors who set foot on British soil for the first time approximately fifty years ago. They eventually brought their families to this nation but still had their roots in Bangladesh which they integrated into British soil. The festival was celebrating how the British Bangladeshis are now the source of pride for a growing population with all their contributions to their communities in the UK and the significant advancement within them. Mr. Taher also wanted to recognise the success and achievements of our younger generation who are always striving to make the community proud. He also wanted to highlight the heartbreaking fact that more of our youth are being introduced to drugs and knife crime. Golapganj festival wanted to try and sway the young generation of British Bengalis and see a continuity in our roots which must be preserved. This helped in establishing a bond with the younger and older members of the community. The festivals have been a huge success within the community and has been attended by over 1000 community members.
